It is shown that improvement of rocket systems is possible through air augmentation of rocket thrust; rocket gases contain large amount of unburned fuel which can be burned to produce additional thrust if air is mixed into supersonic rocket exhaust; problems to be solved are development of method of mixing air with propellant gases and development of inlet; basic features of hypersonic ramjets and performance potential; problem areas relating to supersonic combustion and inlet nozzles, and engine configuration.
