Oldest problem of space trajectory optimization is determination of minimum fuel transfer between orbits in inverse square field, referred to as Lawden's Problem; paper investigates question of whether finite number of impulses is optimum, and considers number of impulses required for various maneuvers, in time-open and in time-fixed case; Hohmann-transfer, bi-elliptic, and optimum bi-elliptic transfer, shown in drawing, are discussed together with various maneuvers and new solutions, which indicate that multiple thrusting periods can reduce consumption of propellant for certain space missions; directions for further research are outlined.
