First high endurance cutter for U S Coast Guard since 1946, was built by Avondale Shipyards, Inc, in New Orleans; six sister cutters of same basic design are also in various stages of construction; 378 ft, 29 knot vessel is powered by CODOG type of propulsion plant consisting of two Pratt and Whitney Aircraft 18,000 shp FT-4 aircraft-type gas turbines and two Fairbanks-Morse two cycle, 12 cyl, turbocharged 38D8-1/8 opposed piston 3500 shp diesel engines; controllable-pitch propellers are used to gain performance through extreme range of operation.
