Summary of status of present knowledge of aerothermodynamic problems of re-entry; re-entry from lunar missions at 36,000 fps causes significant fraction of total energy of gas surrounding re-entry vehicle to be invested in ionization; physical properties of ionized air vary significantly from those of dissociated air as encountered in re-entry from satellite velocity; radiative heat transfer from equilibrium region and nonequilibrium zone can be important in lunar re-entry.
