The effects of interchanges on the macroscopic traffic status of road networks is not very clear according to the practice data. The existing research and survey data shows that the macroscopic fundamental diagram (MFD) is an attribute of the urban road network. Therefore, the features of MFD can help to understand the impacts of interchanges on the traffic status of a road network. Firstly, road networks with 20 intersections and various scenarios of interchange locations are simulated using micro-simulation software VISSIM. Secondly, unsaturated, saturated, and oversaturated traffic statuses of road networks with different interchange numbers and locations are simulated. Thirdly, piecewise linear fitting is used to describe MFD based on cluster analysis. Finally, the impacts of interchange numbers and locations on urban road network are analyzed by the features of MFD. The result shows that the number and location of interchanges have influence on the traffic status of urban road networks.
