Intelligent transportation system (ITS) technologies of Paramics have been deployed to alleviate traffic congestion on the expressways in the city of Beijing, China,. This paper has discussed several types of technologies including variable message signs, variable speed limit signs, actual traffic controls and ramp metering. These technologies have provided advanced traffic control strategies to guide drivers during congestions to improve the efficiency of the city transportation network, to improve traffic flow and travel time and filter the on-ramp traffic to access freeways. A case study is also presented to demonstrate that the travel delay decreases over 20 percent after the installation of these advanced ITS-based traffic guidance and control strategies.
