Research Data Lifecycle

Research data are a fundamental part of scientific work and the stages of the research data life cycle are closely connected to the phases of the research process. The ability to re-use and reproduce research data not only ensures scientific progress, but also contributes significantly to quality assurance. Effective research data management supports researchers in their work and provides general and professional standards that increase the transparency of the research process; the publication of research data makes the work of scientists more visible and eventually accelerates the process of knowledge discovery.

The research data lifecycle covers all steps that need to be considered for successful research data management. These include:

  • Planning data collection and data management
  • Generating data through experiments, measurements, interviews, observations, simulations, etc.
  • Processing the acquired data and transferring the data into a suitable form for later evaluation
  • Analysis of the processed data to generate the actual research results
  • Archiving of selected data for long-term preservation
  • Publication of the processed research data in a suitable form
  • Ensuring reusibility of the research data through appropriate licensing

Each of these steps requires special measures to ensure a successful research data lifecycle even after the end of the project. During each of these steps we are at your side with advice and support. If you want more information,  read Managing and Sharing Data.
