This chapter discusses the improvement of small DC motors used in automobiles which was conducted using robustness as criteria. The robustness was evaluated by the relationship between the mechanical power and power consumption. It was considered ideal that the mechanical power required could be obtained from the minimum power consumption. In order to respond to the various requirements on DC motors including low power consumption, new design optimization technology for DC motors has been needed at the R&D phase. The noise factors are often selected from the environmental temperature or aging in the customers' usage conditions. The chapter shows the predicted values of the S/N ratio and the sensitivity on the optimal design and the current design along with the results of the confirmation tests. Enhancement of the energy efficiency by 4.3% causes increase of the mechanical power obtained from an in‐vehicle battery.
