Intake manifolds incorporate electronic actuators to operate air control valves for tuning and emission purposes. This benchmark study determines the robustness and performance levels of eight competitive actuators using the Taguchi optimization methods. Relevant performance characteristics of the actuators are current draw, torque output, angle of rotation, and response time. The ideal function includes these parameters with an input signal of electrical power (voltage x current) and an output response of mechanical power (torque x angle/time). The benchmark testing necessitated a practical, low‐cost test setup capable of mounting the various actuators, providing a consistent torque load, and measuring the parameters. This testing used an existing torque versus angle measurement tool with minor modifications. The robust assessment approach to benchmarking performance generated results that separated the eight different designs by measuring the robustness of the base functional characteristics that are important to the customer.
