ISO 26262 discusses safety culture as being the enduring values, attitudes, motivations, and knowledge of an organization in which safety is prioritized over competing goals in decisions and behaviors. Safety is still the absence of unreasonable risk when used in the context of safety of the intended function. The central system safety organization is expected to have deep domain knowledge of system safety. The safety manager is embedded in the product development group, regardless of the enterprise organization. Potential consumer expectations must be satisfied in all areas sufficiently to lead to the purchase of the vehicles being manufactured. System safety is perceived as having an equivalent status to system engineering or software engineering in a single‐product organization, or a status equivalent to the leader of a product in a multiple‐product‐line organization. Direct executive action to prioritize safety tasks can mitigate adverse effects of this organization on the safety culture.
