Simple aluminide coatings are widely used to protect turbine airfoils but, for severe environments, aluminides modified by elements such as silicon, chromium or platinum are more and more often used. Research is now underway to obtain more complex aluminides either by electrolytic deposition of alloys and particles or by the combination of thermochemical processes. In this paper, details are presented of a complex aluminide coating MCrAlY which is obtained by the combination of two processes: an electrophoretic deposit performed in an alcoholic medium gives a porous skeleton which is subsequently densified and consolidated by the vapour phase aluminizing process industrially performed on SNECMA engine blades.
