A new thermal analysis method of the synchronizer ring on its friction-surface temperature, which affects the synchronizer-ring durability, was developed. Three new factors (see below) are added to the conventional check items at the initial design stage of the synchronizer. These three items enable the designers to estimate the friction-surface temperature under synchronizing, and to optimize the synchronizer specification from the durability aspects. 1. Estimation of the friction-surface temperature in synchronizing. 2. Control of friction-surface temperature by optimizing the surface-pressure distribution. 3. Selection of the most appropriate SNR (Synchronizer) material in terms of the heat conductivity and the hardness under high temperature. Moreover, it should be noted that the friction surface of the synchronizer reaches a veay high temperature. These findings will also contribute to demonstrating the lubricating characteristics of the friction surface.
