Papanikolaou and Dafnias (1997) presented the hydrodynamic optimization and design of an innovative fast displacement catamaran ferry for service in the Greek inter-island traffic. The designed ferry 'Supercat-Haroula' -here denoted by GOUTCAT- is one of the largest steel caramarans ever built world-wide (L(OA) = 80 m) and the first of this type and size designed and built entirely in Greece. With a transport capacity of 1400 passengers (summer season), 230 cars and an installed power of 2x5500 HP, it has a service speed of about 20 knots. First year service experience suggested that the hydrodynamic performance of the vessel was well within theoretical predictions and model ecperiments. However, due to a wrong initial estimate of the vessel's finally reached outfitting weight, the initially planned payload capacity, especially the possible loading of trucks, could not be met. The actual deadweight capacity was only about 400 tons. Therefore a possible increase of the vessel's displacement by about 20 % at the original draft of 5 m was investigated, on the condition that the ship's service speed does not substantially decrease. This design problem was solved using modern CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics). Model experiments verified the theoretical results.
