Natural gas vehicles (NGV) cylinders are required to be inspected periodically; hydrostatically and/or visually. Alternatively a number of acoustic emission testing techniques have been proposed to inspect the cylinders without removing the cylinders from the vehicles. This paper gives an overview of some of the acoustic emission research work associated with the different types of cylinder designs. The work to date have identified some issues that affects that practicality of acoustic emission techniques. Some overpressurization of the cylinder beyond the fill pressure is required to achieve reliable acoustic emission responses. For some designs, multiple fills are necessary to perform AE inspections. Some cylinder designs also require a large number of AE sensors in order to monitor the entire cylinder surface. Current NGV standards do not include a hydrostatic test requirement due to questions on the efficacy of the procedure.
