Methods for predicting the hydrodynamic and ice contact loads experienced by screw propellers during navigation in ice are described. A three dimensional panel method has been developed to predict the hydrodynamic forces, and a time-domain propeller-ice interaction simulation model is used to predict the ice contact forces. The methods are applied to two fixed pitch Arctic ice breaker propellers and the predictions are presented. Comparisons are made to available experiment measurements. The relevance of the prediction methods to propeller and propulsion system design is discussed.
