The authors have developed an automatic installation system for offshore structures such as breakwater caissons with the aim of saving labor during caisson installation and improving worker safety. With this system, the present winch operation which is manually carried out by several operators on a floating crane can be automated, thereby improving working conditions on offshore construction sites. The automatic installation system includes programs to manage installation work using two associated units: a tugboat support system and an anchor wire system. Hydraulic model experiments on these two systems have already been conducted and reported. In the case of the tugboat support system, experimental results showed that a caisson experienced greater motion when the incoming wave period was longer. However, to ensure stability during caisson installation, such a large caisson motion must be avoided. Therefore, in this study, the authors suggest the use of antirolling boards to decrease the caisson motion, especially roll and heave motions, when using the tugboat support system. This paper outlines the thugboat type automatic installation system, then describes and discusses the experimental results of the tugboat support system for caissons with and without antirolling boards.
