The paper evaluates the possibility of using a general purpose multibody code for the analysis of the dynamics of a flexible rotorcraft, with emphasis on rotor blades. To this end some new capabilities, i.e. the generation of beam section properties and the modal analysis of complex composite rotating beams, have been added to a finite element program, MSC/NASTRAN, to generate the data required by a general purpose multibody code, DADS, capable of treating deformable bodies by using modal coordinates. After adding to DADS a user written routine to calculate the unsteady aerodynamic loads of rotating blades, both for hovering and forward flight conditions, the formulation is verified by a series of numerical simulations. The results obtained demonstrate that such an approach, while leaving the way open to more effective developments, is adequate and not limited by any problem specific assumption and can eventually lead to a global modelling capability for the whole rotorcraft.
