ABB Daimler Benz Transportation (Rolling Stock) Ltd. (Adtranz) has carried out an extensive laboratory study of the anti-graffiti performance of a considerable number of removal chemicals and barrier materials on a range of substrates. The results of this work, together with experience gained in service, form the basis of this paper. The problems posed by graffity on the exterior and interior surfaces of railway rolling stock are reviewed. The various types of graffiti and the range of materials affected and finishes subject to them are considered. An assessment is made of the pernicious effects of graffity and those combinations of graffiti agent and surface which are most problematic. Methods of combating graffity are covered for both the vehicle designer and the train operator. Design alternatives are reviewed from a number of perspectives, including materials selection, interiors detailing and psychological considerations. The options open to the operator are assessed and recommendations are made as to the best use of removal chemicals and barrier layers.
