In the effort of increasing power density and thermal efficiency of vehicular engines supercharging to higher manifold pressures is a promising approach. A high engine torque over a wide speed range and an immediate response to load increase demands can be met utilizing turbo-supercharging only in the case of complex control features such as demonstrated with the Hyperbar system. The combination of the Comprex pressure wave super charger with a turbocharger represents a simple system meeting the specific requirements. The Caterpillar engine designed for a much lower bmep level proved capable to render a much higher power output. This is due to the fact that the compression ratio was reduced and the inlet manifold temperature was kept constant even though the air pressure was much higher. Under laboratory conditions the lower compression ratio did not impose starting problems. In practical application special means for cold starting will be needed. The test results demonstrate the feasibility of two stage supercharging combining the Comprex pressure wave supercharger with a standard turbocharger for reaching extreme bmep values over a wide engine speed, range with immediate power response. The features make this attractive to vehicular diesel engines both for commercial and military applications. Two stage turbocharging providing equal performance would call for rather sophisticated variable turbine geometry or waste gating controls not presently readily available. The laboratory testing has not been conducted to the full potential of the system. An optimization of all components will lead to further gains in power concentration and thermal efficiency.
