Development of airbag restraint system needs many cars crashed to determine the response characteristics of ESPS system. The cost and the period of the development depend on the available number and the available time of cars so that the reduction in the cost and the period might be limited under conventional method relying on real car crash test. The paper describes an application of numerical simulation in developing the optimized structure and the optimized airbag restraint system for a passenger car from the initial design stage to the detail drawing stage in aming at reducing the cost and the period. By using the developed finite element full car, the acceleration histories are obtained at the mounting position of ESPS sensor under various crash conditions and are used in designing the sensor. The historical result of deforming behaviour of interior parts and acceleration from the crash simulation of the full car are used as input data for simulating the occupant behavior. This simulation gives optimal selections in the airbag firing time, the characteristics of kneebolster and other parameters of the airbag restaint system.
