An ESA supported study has been undertaken to define an Integrity Control Methodology for thermostructural elements, made from C/C, C/SiC and SiC/SiC. On specimens of all three different materials bending tests under thermomechanical cycles, following the thermal load conditions of hypersonic launch and re-entry, have been performed. The test samples have been manufactured with oxidation protective coatings and were prepared with different initial defects (drilled holes). In each case of the materials considered, high sensitivity of the test results with respect to the initial defect size can be stated. The most appropriate combination of non-destructive inspection methods (NDI) to detect defects, have been tested. Analysis tools to predict strength and degradation have been screened and tested. Finally integrity control has been applied on a C/SiC heat shingle, which is going to be validated by several tests.
