Recently, automotive electronic have progressed toward increasing engine performance and easy of handling in consideration of customer requirements. So the automotive electronic systems have increased and the controls for these systems have also become markedly complicated. On the other hand, when malfunctions occur in these systems, the causes are complex and not easily repaired which has given rise to a difficult situation leading to problems with serviceability. Early detection of malfunctioning areas with these systems is a vital issue in the improvement of safety. This paper seeks to introduce the present state of diagnosis for electronic systems in Japan. Also reported: DAIHATSU's development and the practical application of a low-cost, high-performance off-board diagnostic tester which employs the ISO 9141 standards; the outline of this tester's actual application; the discussion of its interface, the communication protocols, etc.
