Mathematical determination of the airborne sound transmission for a machinery sound source transferred from one room to another room is a difficult problem. This paper describes an acoustic reciprocity technique for quantification of the air borne sound transmission from an I.C. engine in a test cell to a separate control room. The basis for this technique is the determination of the volume velocity distribution of the source and the acoustic transfer function between the source regions and the receiver point. Sound pressure prediction and its direct measurement from an I.C. engine noise source in a normal test cell to a receiver point in the separate control room is performed with satisfactory agreement in the frequency range from 500 Hz to 2 kHz. The prediction of noise levels in a room separated from the noise source illustrates the power of the reciprocity technique. The paper describes the prediction method and the laboratory experiment and also discusses the potential application of the technique in an automotive vehicle.
