In the development of unmanned automatic operation system for the crawler tractor, it is important to clarify the interaction between crawler and soil, and the effectively use the tractor from viewpoint of energy efficiency. This paper deals analytically and experimetally with the energy dissipation from the running gear to the soil. The relationships between the forces such as driving force, drawler pull and motion resistances acting on the running gear are considered and the energy conservation are analytically discussed per unit travelling distance and per unit travelling time of crawler tractors. From the analytical considerations of energy conservation, it is indicated that there is an optimum slip between the running gear and the soil and its existence was confirmed by experiments using model and prototype crawler tractors. The optimum slip is influenced by the characteristics of running gear and soil properties.
