Calculated results of temperature distribution when band contact occurs between lining and drum are presented. A three-dimensional finite element method to analyse temperatures is used when incomplete contact arise form initial imperfections in the surfaces and changes occur from distortions and wear during rubbing. Predicted results are discussed and show that high temperatures are reached at certain regions on the rubbing path and temperatures may fluctuate during a brake application. The temperatures and forces involved are sufficiently high to cause non-uniform deformation to occur and change the nature of contact between the friction material and the mating surface. A number of contact situation are included in the model and their practical significance is discussed.
