Automotive cooling systems have not changed fundamentally in the past century. Aqueous coolant is pumped through the cylinder block and head by a small rotary pump. Heat is then renoved from the coolant in an air/coolant radiator. The air intake is invariably of fixed geometry and airflow may be assisted by a fan. The principal causes of loss in small automobile cooling systems are aerodynamic drag through the radiator and water pump power consumption. Experience has shown that the limitation on coolant flow is generally the radiator heat transfer performance. The case is made for minimising energy losses by optimising the cooling airflow and controlling the coolant flowrate with a high efficiency electrically driven pump.
