The basis of protection against fire in passenger ships is as stated in the SOLAS Regulations, from which evolved the rules of Government Authorities and Classification Societies. The standards effected, together with details of materials and their testing by approved Fire Research Organisations, give ground for considerable thought. Changes in legislation and in the methods of protection using zonal layouts and modular construction have brought improved standards. Developments in the design and construction of fire resisting doors, in association with clearer thought as to means of escape, have led to better all round safety and a sound base for future improvements.
