To meet recent Japanese long haulers' demands, a power increase plus better fuel economy of the turbocharged and charge cooled diesel engines for heavy vehicles was accomplished. This paper describes several innovative technologies such as improved turbocharger performance, the electronically controlled waste gate valve, the so-called multi harmonized inertia charging system, and so on concerning both the power increase and the fuel economy. As a result, Hino model EP100-II engine achieved a high Break Mean Effective Pressure of 16.8 bar with the assistane of IHI (Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Co., Ltd.) model RHC7-VX27 turbocharger which provides about 80 % compressor efficiency with a wide flow range despite its high pressure ratio.
