Truly automated fastening on the scale of a commercial airplane structure can be achieved only through the use of some type of robotic manipulation of the tooling used to apply the fasteners. Current fastener technology in the aerospace industry involves the use of upsetting forces, and corresponding tooling loads, which are far in excess of what could be carried by a reasonable robotic structure. Consequently, it becomes necessary to consider novel fastener and/or tooling concepts that will be effective while reducing substantially the loads that must be carried by the structures which locate and support the tooling. Before embarking on such a research effort, it is essential to determine the current state of the art of fastening practices related to aircraft assemblies and to review prior research conducted in this area.
