Prediction of the tribological properties of friction materials is very important, particularly in the early stage of the development and design of a friction mechanism. The existing theoretical equations are based on physical, chemical and thermodynamical properties of friction materials. This paper presents the modelling of the tribological properties of friction material used in motor vehicle brakes. This procedure is based on the design of experiments theory. It has been developed at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Belgrade University, Yugoslavia, in order to obtain the friction coefficient and lining wear predicted under speed, pressure and interface temperature effects. A very good correlation between theoretical and experimental results is obtained.
