Conventional train control is performed in the following manner. Train location is detected by wayside signaling facilities, and according to train location, train control signals are indicated to prevent crashes between trains. However, this control requires enormous number of facilities, that means large amount installation and maintenance expenditures. Recent remarkable progress in the field of information technology makes a new train control system where train itself detects its location and communicates with other trains through radio transmission. Development of the new train control system called ATACS started in 1995, the control run tests were conducted in Senseki line at 300 km north of Tokyo from September 1997 to March 1998. This paper describes outline of ATACS and the results of control run rests.
