The principal characteristics of fixed traction installations for the Belgian high-speed line (LGV) are described. The electrification of the new line uses a 25 kV AC supply system, rather than the 3 kV DC normally used in Belgium. The choice of the 25 kV system, principles of the 2x25 kV/50 Hz supply, and its application to the West branch of the high-speed line are discussed, showing the plan of the line and operation of the Chievres substation. The design of the catenary system, the materials used and techniques of high-speed current pick-up are explained.
