Aviation is a system built using Smalltalk-V to teach air traffic control cadets aspects of the theory of air traffic control. Rather than reproducing a text book on the screen, Aviation is intended to convey qualitative aspects of the underlying theory to the cadets. Aviation presents students with interactive 'models'. These are small scale simulations which the student may manipulate, changing the values of settings and seeing the outcome. For instance, in a model of the take-off run of an aircraft, a cadet might choose the aircraft type, the runway composition, the direction and speed of the wind and then observe in an animation how much of the runway the aeroplane requires for take-off. The training delivered by Aviation cuts across different curriculum areas, bringing together various aspects of the theory to provide students with a deeper understanding of the topics they have been taught in the classroom and to assist them in developing a better picture of the overall subject of air traffic control.
