The difference between analogue and digital signal processing is explained and the real-time operations made possible by new integrated circuit chips are highlighted. Applications in a Sony stereo receiver and a Kenwood amateur radio transceiver are compared. Further developments in telephony, facsimile and computer communications are discussed, along with an application to automotive engine silencing without conventional baffle plates.
