The automobile power train (power transmission system) is a general name for mechanical elements that transmit the engine output to the wheels, such as the clutch, torque converter, manual and automatic transmission, final speed reduction and differential gears, viscous coupling, axles, etc. Since vehicles to be tested come in a variety of models, a power train tester must change its configuration according to the testing purposes. In addition it must be be restricted to the structure of an individual part being tested and the size of the testing room. Accordingly the configuration of a tester varies in many ways. The authors describe equipment actually used and some essentials for planning a mechanical configuration of a tester intended for the development of a power train system, since this is the type of tester most frequently demanded. They also introduce a typical sample of an auto-transmission (AT) test system using a transient dynamometer which can simulate engine output characteristics, inertia and high through rate engine speed control.
