The control system design for a three axis stabilized bias momentum satellite is discussed. The satellite is equipped with one pitch momentum wheel, two magnetic coils for roll/yaw attitude and wheel momentum actuation purposes, and a two-axis infrared Earth sensor. Because of the time-varying character of the plant, application of conventional design methods is difficult and time-consuming. However, Multi-Objective Parameter Synthesis using the interactive optimization package ANDECS-MOPS reduces the number of development cycles to a large extent and thereby cuts the non-recurring costs. An iterative design procedure is proposed, where each iteration consists of two steps. In a first step, the performance and robustuess of the controller is improved by minimizing suitable performance criteria. In a second step a systematic worst-case robustness analysis for the most critical design specifications such as roll/yaw attitude accuracy is performed. This is achieved by maximizing the respective criteria in the domain of the uncertain parameters which brings up worst case operating conditions. If the robustness is not acceptable, the worst case operating conditions are added in the next design cycle as additional performance criteria.
