The primary objective of this project, which began im November 1992, is to research, design, build, and test a PV-powered charging station for an electric vehicle (EV). Sponsor of the project is the Pennsylvania Energy Development Authority. This paper reports on the design of the system and preliminary performance results from December, 1993, through February, 1994. The system went on-line in November 1993 and includes a PV array of 30 Siemens 55-watt panels (nominal 1.65 kWp) mounted on seasonally-adjusted racks on the top of a carport. An additional two-axis tracking system was designed and installed for comparison. Output from the array is conditioned by a utility-interactive 2 kW DC-to-AC inverter which produces 120 VAC power. The system has performed well and data collection has been very reliable.
