Lead-Acid-Batteries are utilised extensively on the Indian Railways on Passenger Coaches for train lighting and air-conditioning. These batteries operate under severe environmental conditions like high temperature, vibrations and dusty atmosphere. These batteries require frequent topping on the line, which is not a desirable feature. There is a need to develop batteries for these applications, which are lighter, occupy less space, require less frequent topping and have higher charge retention capacity when not in use. Battery-powered locomotives have been under consideration to avoid the necessity of wiring large number of tracks in the years in the electrified territories. However, it has not been found feasible to develop such vehicles due to excessive weight of batteries on account of low energy density of batteries. The use of batteries for propulsion of railway vehicle is feasible only if the batteries have higher energy densities then the existing rating of 25-30 Wh/kg.
