Lead-acid batteries have successfully been around for a long time and they will continue to have a substantial presence for a good few years to come. Many of the competitive avanced battery systems, although involved in international testing, will not be on the market for at least five years. The main problem in commercializing these avanced rechargeable batteries is in developing reliable and cheap manufacturing technology or waiting for new markets to open. No doubt when there is another oil shortage, we will see a profusion of new EV motive power batteries surging into the marketplace. Companies have followed a variety of investigative routes to achieve an improved battery. There is no general agreement on which will win the lion's share of the market in EV traction batteries, although those which can operate at 100 Cel and probably using a nonaqueous electrolyte are top of the running. As is the case for the industrial acceptance of any new or improved material, there will always be a trade off between performance and cost. Each market will require its own set of specifications to be met, the end-user can only win.
