Since 1963 the TELDIX Company in Heidelberg, Germany has been active in the field of autonomous land vehicle navigation systems. These systems determine vehicle position and heading by means of dead reckoning, using on-board sensors only. Navigational aids for ships and aviation are in use for obvious reason. For a mission on ground, however, a map so far has been the only instrument to establish the own position. Modern weapon systems, such as anti-aircraft tanks or battletanks specify a high mobility which has to be guaranteed under any environment such as low visibility due to fog or night, or with closed hatches. For that reason a simple and precise navigational equipment is a must in tactical land vehicles. Our company believes that especially for military application land vehicle navigation systems have to be autonomous, which means that all navigational data have to be established without using external aids such as radio bearing etc. Even satellite navigation systems most likely will not be considered as the one and only instrument, but one of many sensors. This attitude, however, might differ for non-military application.
