Almost all existing IFF interrogators are fitted with ISLS (Interrogation Side Lobe Suppression). Nowadays, many have RSLS (Reception Side Lobe Suppression) which, besides the side lobe suppression function, provides the possibility to adjust the effective beamwidth of the antenna. More recent interrogators have a monopulse capability which by comparison of the signals received simultaneously through two diagram arrangements of the same antenna, gives the exact value of the target azimuth. Elevation measurement has never been considered in IFF. This paper presents an original solution allowing a true 3D localization of the target applied to an airborne IFF interrogator. The principle is developed and the main components described, from the antenna made of 4 dipoles located at the corners of a square with a specific feed network, to the receiver processing both amplitude and phase. The outputs simultaneously provide the received video along with the corresponding digitized azimuth and elevation.
