The M-BAHN is a fully automated magnetically levitated, short distance rapid transit system for elevated, ground level or underground guideways. The weight of the vehicles is carried by permanent magnets. The adjustment of the attractive magnetic force to the actual weight is by mechanical means through guidance rollers. The propulsion is done by an electromagnetic travelling field generated in the guideway and working together with the permanent magnets as a synchronous linear motor. The propulsion energy is supplied to the motor sections from the pulse width modulated inverters at the substations through feeder cables and contactors along the line. The motor connections and the lengths of the motor sections are designed to meet the local requirements of the travelling program. The entire M-Bahn System and its components have proved ready for service application at the test and demonstration facility in Berlin, the operation on that reference line has started in May 1987.
