Considerable development has taken place recently in the areas of information technology, data processing, and communication systems. This has encouraged the evolution of a number of prototype data-communication systems to satisfy various requirements in the management of traffic. This paper discusses the design and development of a low profile data-communications system operating between a stationary roadside unit and a moving vehicle. Experimental and field trial results are presented for the prototype transponder system.
