This paper describes a system for controlling the track false alarm rate (TFAR) of an automatic tracking system. This is of particular importance in a naval tracking environment when the tracker feeds directly to a gun control or missile firing system. The problem becomes particularly acute when a large number of false returns result from clutter which are not removed by MTI or a Stationary Plot Filter (SPF) and which could include a threat such as a sea skimming missile. The paper confines its attention to conventional rotating radars and does not address the problem of Multi-Function Radars. One practical approach is to implement a feed back loop into the plot extraction system and this can be controlled in two main ways. The system can be de-sensitised by raising the threshold when tracking finds too many plots in its gates. Alternatively, the system can be made more sensitive by using lower thresholds in the plot extractor and putting the loading and decision making into the tracker, controlled by a TFAR mechanism.
