The technologies of magnetic suspension and linear electric drives have matured to the stage at which low-speed shuttle and urban transit systems are operational and at which high-speed systems have reached prototype test and evaluation. This paper presents a review of the current status and future potential of these systems. The foregoing review of Maglev systems was conducted as part of a Maglev technology assessment by the Canadian Institute of Guided Ground Transport for the City of Las Vegas to identify those systems which offer near-term potential for high speed service application in the Las Vegas-Southern California corridor. As a result of the review, the Maglev systems which have demonstrated full-scale functional capability were categorized according to their perceived state of development and their perceived operational speed limits. It will be noted that only two Maglev systems were considered to be sufficiently far advanced in full-scale system development and to have sufficient speed cpability to be considered as near-term prospects for high-speed intercity service, namely: TRANSRAPID (EMS mode) and JNR Maglev 'Linear-Motor-Car' (EDS mode).
