An ultralightweight flexible-blanket flatpack, foldout solar array design is defined with specific power performance characteristics that exceed by a factor of 2 and 3, respectively, currently demonstrated flexible-blanket and rigid-panel arrays. The design is based on existing and near-term photovoltaic components and structural systems technology. The design establishes a critical intermediate milestone of the NASA Office of Aeronautics and Space Technology (OAST) high-performance Advanced Photovoltaic Solar Array (APSA) program through its primary objective of realistically demonstrating a solar array that can provide greater than 130 W/kg at beginning of life (BOL) and 100 W/kg at end of life (EOL) for a 10-year geosynchronous 10-kW (BOL) space power system. This paper reviews the critical features of the preliminary design and the implications for longterm array technology development.
