The impact of different bit representations on noise emissions in automotive networks has been investigated. NRZ and MAN coding perform well in these applications. PWM contains a series of high-amplitude dirac pulses in its spectrum, producing comparatively much higher noise levels. Since spectrum amplitudes decrease with the Si function over frequency, PWM might be applied in low-speed applications, even if MAN offers easy resynchronization as well. If however communication between automotive realtime control systems requires higher transfer rates, a PWM bit representation turns out be less advantageous.
