To ensure safety during excavation and to reduce excavation costs are of concern for gas industry. So, development of a locator which can locate the position of buried pipe from the surface correctly has been one of the most important R and D work within the gas industry. Various kinds of pipe locators using inductive magnetic field technology have been developed and used for many years, however the performance is generally far from satisfactory. Especially the accuracy of depth measurement is insufficient. Now, we have just developed a new pipe locator system (Intelligent Pipe Locator) using both the same inductive magnetic field measuring technology and a new data processing method for the purpose of achieving the significant improvement on locating performance.
