Determination of the antenna pattern is important for a spaceborne SAR such as SIR-B. Such antennas are so large that measurements on the ground before flight must be checked to assure that changes in shape between gravity and non-gravity environments have not occurred. For SIR-B the antenna was so large that no complete-antenna pattern was even made on the ground; only one section was measured. Pattern measurements were made for this antenna while it was in space by use of ground receivers. The method described here supplements these measurements by using the radar signal returned from large homogeneous areas of the surface. Preliminary indications are that the beam was slightly wider than the theoretical pattern used in producing the corrected images, but final conclusions await receipt of more uncorrected data tapes.
