Rebecca-Eureka is the story of a simple system, designed initially to assist in the delivery of supplies to the Army or the 'Resistance Movements' in occupied Europe, which expanded into a blind homing and approach aid for most of the aircraft in Service. Much of the credit for the development of Rebecca must go to R. Hanbury-Brown and J.W.S. Pringle of TRE. But for their enthusiasm and drive, at a time when the priority and drive was on defence of the U.K., the systems might never have been developed. Today the design of a secondary radar system would be commonplace but in 1941 onwards there was a serious restriction on the availability and choice of valves and components. Moreover, priority was given to defence equipment. Brief technical details are given in the Annex to this paper of most Marks of the R-E series though many sub-variants were developed for particular operations.
